Homes For Every Generation:
More Housing, Lower Costs, Expand Homeownership
A Comprehensive Housing Strategy to Advance Equitable Growth and Affordability for All District Residents
Housing is the single largest expense for most District families, with median rents exceeding $2,000 per month and median home prices approaching $700,000. Without decisive action, rising costs will continue to push out the very teachers, first responders, young professionals, and working families and seniors who have built their lives here or want to plant roots and make DC a permanent home.
As Councilmember, Kenyan McDuffie authored pioneering laws and prioritized equitable funding in the District’s budget to expand pathways to homeownership, strengthen affordable housing programs, and push the District to build more homes to meet the growing demand. As Mayor, Kenyan will build on this foundation, implementing Homes for Every Generation, a comprehensive housing strategy that both increases housing supply and protects affordability, so that DC remains a city where residents of all incomes can live, work, and raise families.
Through Homes for Every Generation, Kenyan will make the District the most accessible city in the region for homeownership, by dramatically increasing housing production, preserving affordable housing at risk of loss, and giving families of all sizes the stability to remain in the neighborhoods they call home.
By The Numbers
The District's Future…
The District’s future depends on being a city where residents of all incomes can afford to live, work, and raise families. Through Homes for Every Generation, Kenyan McDuffie will pursue a housing strategy that:
Makes it easier and faster to build new homes
Expands homeownership opportunities
Preserves and builds affordable housing
Protects longtime residents from displacement
Ultimately, the prosperity and diversity of our city depends on its ability to remain affordable for residents across all income levels. The Homes for Every Generation plan will make DC more affordable by simultaneously streamlining new home construction, expanding pathways to homeownership, securing existing and building new affordable housing, and preventing the displacement of long-term residents. This comprehensive approach, blending smart growth with robust affordability protections, positions DC to remain a thriving place residents of all walks of life can call home.
