Kenyan R. McDuffie is a fourth-generation Washingtonian, public servant, and proven leader who has dedicated his life to fighting for and delivering results for the residents of the District of Columbia.

Raised in the Stronghold neighborhood of Ward 5, Kenyan was shaped by a tight-knit, working-class community that instilled in him a deep belief in opportunity, accountability, and service. His family’s deep history in D.C. instilled an unshakable commitment to fairness, economic opportunity, and justice for every resident in every neighborhood.

After graduating from Jackson Reed High (formerly Wilson High), Kenyan worked for the United States Postal Service. Kenyan, using the money he earned from delivering mail to DC residents to put himself though UDC, eventually attending and graduating from Howard University and the University of Maryland School of Law. After law school, Kenyan began his legal career as a prosecutor. He later served in the U.S. Department of Justice under President Obama, working to protect and uphold individuals’ civil rights. His career in law was driven by one principle: holding bad actors accountable and delivering justice to victims.

In 2012, Kenyan was first elected to the D.C. Council, representing Ward 5, and then elected citywide in 2022. For more than 13 years on the D.C. Council, he has built a record of turning bold ideas into law and delivering tangible results for District residents.

Kenyan’s legislative record has helped make neighborhoods across the city more affordable, safer, and connected to the city’s prosperous growth. He has authored and passed landmark laws to create and preserve affordable housing, protect tenants and workers, invest in public safety rooted in accountability and prevention, and close racial and economic gaps. From securing hundreds of millions of dollars for housing and environmental justice to standing up for seniors, small businesses, and working families, Kenyan has consistently turned values into action.

He’s running for Mayor to fight for and deliver a city that works for everyone: affordable for residents from every walk of life; safer and full of opportunity for youth, adults, seniors and small business owners alike; and built to help multigenerational families thrive while supporting entrepreneurs and innovation that help our city grow. He believes Washington can be more affordable, more equitable, and safer with leadership willing to roll up its sleeves and do the hard work to get it done.

Kenyan is raising his two daughters with his wife in Ward 5 and remains deeply connected to the community that raised him.
